NEW REACH REGULATION NO. 74 (EU) 2020/1149
On 24 August 2020, a new restriction on diisocyanates was published by the European authorities under REACH. It aims to prevent respiratory and skin irritation potentially caused by diisocyanates, which requires training of professional users prior to use. Since PU products are made by reacting diisocyanates and polyols, training is needed to handle PU products safely.
TRAINING FOR PROFESSIONALS
This training requirement will soon apply to all professional and industrial users of products with a total monomeric diisocyanate concentration of ≥0.1%.
Relevant PU products will have to carry a sentence on the label indicating requirement for training from 24 February 2022. All professional and industrial users must be trained and certified 18 months later, by 24 August 2023. To comply, training will be made available online.
The industry association of diisocyanate manufacturers is involved in preparing training materials in line with the legal requirements in all European Union languages. The training material is expected to be made available from February 2022. More information on the use of PU products is already available now at: https://www.feica.eu.our-priorities/safe-use-diisocyanates
The training sentence will be clearly visible on the label from 24 February 2022: “From 24 August 2023, adequate training is required for industrial or professional use.”
